Possible Riot at Washington State Prison in Georgia
A “possible riot” occurred at Washington State Prison in Georgia. This incident led to the deaths of at least three inmates and left around a dozen others injured.
Details of the Incident
Early Sunday afternoon, Sheriff Joel Cochran informed local station WRDW that several fights broke out inside the facility in Davisboro, Washington County, Georgia. Thirteen inmates were taken to the hospital. The prison is located about 50 miles southeast of Augusta.
While the fights involved inmates, one guard may have been injured, according to Cochran.
The Washington County Coroner confirmed that two deaths occurred initially from the fights, and a third inmate died later on Sunday evening.
Response and Security Measures
“It’s not uncommon for these things to happen at correctional facilities; however, I think it has been quite some time since we’ve had to come to an incident this large,” Cochran said.
By 6 PM, the prison was secured after a response from the sheriff’s office, the Georgia State Patrol, the Davisboro Police, the Milledgeville Police Department, and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. The county coroner’s office was also present at the scene.

They added, “Several offenders had blood all over them as they made their way into visitation. It was extremely chaotic. The one officer was trying to hold the door closed so they couldn’t get in, but they overpowered her. There are also reports that a helicopter was called to the prison.”
