Mail Carrier Saves Elderly Man from Abuse

A mail carrier found a note from an 81-year-old man that said, “Call the police.” This note helped save the man’s life from further elder abuse. The man, who did not provide his name, reported that he suffered abuse from his live-in caretaker, Denise Williams, according to Atlanta News First.

In a video from the outlet, the elderly man’s hands showed deep, dark red scars. He said these were from Williams scratching him. Williams yelled at him about the condition of his bathroom. When he tried to call 911, she jumped on his chest while he was lying on the ground, trying to reach his phone. Williams, who appears much younger, also scratched his hands and squeezed them. The elderly man stated he “couldn’t stand the pain.”

Williams took his phone, two house phones, and car keys, and locked them in her room. This led the elderly man to take action.

“So, I wrote the little note, put it in the mailbox,” he said. After the postal worker saw the note, they called the police. The man expressed gratitude, saying he wrote a thank you note for being saved from more abuse.

Charges Against Denise Williams

Williams is currently held in Palm Beach County Jail on multiple charges, including robbery and battery on an elderly victim. Police first went to the elderly man’s house, where he provided them with Williams’ car model. They later found Williams at a nearby gas station with the man’s debit card and checkbook.

Williams admitted to taking the man’s cellphone and hurting his hand. She also confessed to disconnecting both landline telephones and hiding his phones in her room, according to detectives.

The elderly man noted that Williams had been good to him at times, mentioning that she saved his life four times. However, he stated that her behavior worsened over time.

“Every month, every day, she got a little bit worse,” he said.

The 81-year-old man, who lives alone, is now looking for a new caregiver.

“I got a hold of a VA, and I may get a hold of somebody else because I really need a live-in. I’ve been getting worse and worse off,” he said.
