Investigation Underway After Shooting in Union City

UNION CITY, Ga. – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is looking into a shooting that injured a 24-year-old man in Union City.

Preliminary information shows that two officers from the Union City Police Department responded to a report of gunfire at an apartment in the 5700 block of Buffington Road around 7:35 p.m. on January 4.

The officers encountered a man, identified as 24-year-old Cameron Willis from Atlanta. He reportedly had a gun when he met the officers at the door. The officers ordered him to drop the weapon, but police say Willis hid the gun behind the door. When he stepped out, the officers fired, hitting him.

Willis was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The two officers involved were taken to a separate hospital for evaluation due to stress-related symptoms, including elevated heart rates and shortness of breath. Neither officer was physically injured.

The GBI was called to investigate, which is standard when a shooting involves police officers.

After the GBI completes its investigation, the case will be sent to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
