In Maywood, seven stores were closed for repeatedly selling tobacco and THC products to minors, pending a hearing later this month.
Officials in Maywood have temporarily closed seven convenience stores and markets. This action follows accusations of “repeated, systemic” sales of tobacco to minors.
The businesses also face allegations of illegally selling THC products to minors. As a result, the village has suspended their licenses until a hearing later this month.
Mayor Nathaniel George Booker stated, “Selling tobacco to minors is not a simple oversight. It is a violation of the law that inflicts long-term biological harm on the next generation.” He emphasized the importance of keeping the community safe for families.
The closures stem from an undercover investigation that revealed ongoing sales of tobacco and nicotine products to minors. Officials accused the businesses of “exploiting youth for profit” and criticized them for endangering children’s health.
A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, to discuss the potential permanent revocation of the licenses for the involved establishments.
