Charges dismissed against Chace Calicut in Houston after a violent driving incident last year, with state citing further investigation needed
Charges Dismissed Against Houston-Area Teen Chace Calicut
HOUSTON – Charges have been dismissed against Chace Calicut, an 18-year-old from the Houston area. He was accused in a violent driving incident last year.
Calicut faced two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Court documents reveal that the charges were dismissed on Wednesday.
The reason given was, “State to do further investigation. Subject to refile.”
Details of the Incident
Calicut was charged in July after an incident on July 6. He had recently committed to the University of Georgia to play football and was a four-star recruit.
Calicut and his North Shore High School classmate, 17-year-old Isaiah Brice Phillip, were involved in the incident.
According to court records, two 17-year-old victims, who were classmates, reported that Calicut was driving a black Escalade on the 13300 block of Kuykendahl with Phillip as the passenger.
Victims’ Claims
The victims claimed that Calicut drove aggressively and brake-checked them. They also stated that Phillip pointed a gun at them when the Escalade was next to their vehicle.
Records indicate that the victims said Phillip fired the gun at them multiple times. One victim told investigators that Calicut had been threatening him at school and over FaceTime calls for several months.
Community Response
After Calicut’s arrest, community advocate Quanell X defended him, stating, “He did not commit a crime.”
Quanell X added, “He was a victim that night, and we have proof.”
On July 18, Calicut and Phillip were charged in connection with the July 6 incident but were not immediately taken into custody.
Two days later, Phillip was killed in a shooting at a pool party in east Harris County.
