Chicago Man Charged with Felony Retail Theft
CHICAGO – A Chicago man faces charges for felony retail theft. Police say he attempted to leave a downtown department store with over $1,200 in merchandise.
Cook County sheriff’s police reported that officers responded around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday to Macy’s on State Street. Store security had reported a theft in progress. Investigators reviewed surveillance video showing a man taking jewelry, multiple gift sets, a comforter, and a can of beer from a cooler before trying to exit the store without paying.
Loss prevention officers attempted to detain the man, but he did not comply. Authorities said responding officers intervened and took the suspect to the ground after he continued to resist arrest. He was then taken into custody.
The man was identified as Jeffery Lowery, 33, of Chicago. He faces a felony retail theft charge and a misdemeanor charge for resisting a peace officer.
Lowery was ordered released from custody on Monday after his initial court appearance at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
