Protests Held in Houston to Honor Renee Nicole Good
Demonstrations took place across the Houston area to honor 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good and to urge local leaders to take action.
Protests in Kingwood and Houston
On Saturday morning, a protest organized by Be Aware: Indivisible Kingwood occurred at the corner of West Lake Houston and Kingwood Drive. Member Ragan Rhode spoke about the isolation felt by many in Kingwood, stating, “If you see government overreach, if you see violence like what we saw in Minneapolis happened, and that’s not okay with you, we want you to know that there’s community here.” She emphasized the need for hope and solidarity among residents.
In the early afternoon, another protest took place outside Houston City Hall. Attendees shared chants and spoke during the event.
Candlelight Vigil in Sugarland
As night fell, residents in Sugarland held a candlelight vigil in memory of Good. Attendee Joanne Gonzales expressed the need for healing and love, saying, “Every life matters, no matter what country you’re from, no matter your race or ethnicity, your age, every life matters.” She called for kindness and respect among people and urged leaders to be held accountable.
Background of the Protests
The local protests in Houston were inspired by national demonstrations following the shooting of a woman by an ICE agent in Minneapolis earlier this week. Several organizations, including Party of Socialists and Liberation Houston and FIEL Houston, along with Sugarland residents, organized the events.
