Raleigh-Durham Airport will charge $45 for travelers without REAL ID starting February 1, urging prompt compliance to avoid fines and delays.
New REAL ID Requirement at RDU Airport
WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) — This is a reminder for those who have not yet obtained their REAL ID.
Starting next month, if you arrive at RDU without a REAL ID, you will have to pay a fee.
REAL IDs have been required since May 2025.
Currently, if you go through TSA security at RDU without a REAL ID, you will receive a pink slip.
This slip indicates to TSA that you need additional screening, which will pull you out of line and delay your travel.
Beginning February 1, you will be required to pay $45 if you do not have the correct ID.
You will still need additional screening, which could cause delays for you and other travelers. RDU leaders urge travelers to secure their REAL ID as soon as possible to avoid the new fee.
Officials at NC DMV encourage people to make appointments now before the busy summer season.
“Every one of our 114 driver’s license officers now welcome walk-in customers from open to close or until we reach daily capacity for that location. We also continue to offer appointments which are currently available up to seven days in advance with new slots added every day, and we’ll be increasing the number of appointments available in early February,” said DMV Commissioner Paul Tine.
You can pay the fee at RDU using a QR code or online at pay.gov.
Once you pay the $45, you will not have to pay it again for your return flight, as long as it is within 10 days of your first travel date.
