Teacher Killed in Raleigh Home Invasion
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — A beloved teacher from Ravenscroft School was killed in her home over the weekend.
Zoe Welsh was attacked by an intruder at her residence on Clay Street near Wade Avenue and St. Mary’s on Saturday morning.
Welsh called 911 and was still on the line with dispatch when the intruder entered her home and assaulted her.
Officers arrived at the scene just after 6:30 a.m. They found Welsh with critical injuries. She received medical aid at the scene and was taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
ABC11 confirmed that Welsh was a teacher at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
Additional officers in the area found the suspect, identified as Ryan Camacho, 36. He was taken into custody and questioned. Camacho has been charged with murder and felony burglary.
According to court records obtained by ABC11, Camacho has been arrested two dozen times. He was previously convicted of escaping prison in Salisbury in 2021.
Last month, a separate case for breaking and entering was dismissed by a Wake County judge after Camacho was found incapable of proceeding. The assistant district attorney attempted to have him voluntarily committed, but the court denied that request.
Camacho made his first court appearance on Monday and was appointed a capital defender. He faces life without parole or the death penalty.
