Oakland County Responds to Multiple Water Rescues

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. (FOX 2) – Oakland County sheriff deputies and first responders have conducted six water rescues in seven days.

On Sunday, residents in Holly rescued a snowmobiler from Bush Lake. This incident is part of a series of rescues, including a 71-year-old man who fell through the ice on Pleasant Lake in Waterford Township on New Year’s Eve.

Neighbors initially attempted to assist, followed by police, first responders, and the sheriff’s office. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard reported that they have responded to six different rescues in the past week.

In the last 24 hours, responders were called out three times. They rescued various items, including snowmobiles, deer, and a dog that unfortunately died.

Bouchard advised that if you must go out on the ice, you should take proper equipment. He also provided guidance for those who witness someone fall through the ice.

Safety Tips for Ice Rescues

“Stay on shore,” Bouchard said. “If you’re planning to rescue, we suggest using a boat to approach the ice. Throw something to the person and pull them out rather than going to them, as you may also fall in.”

He emphasized the importance of calling 911 before attempting any rescue. If a pet runs onto the ice, he advised calling 911 first and using a boat if available.
